Reader Appeals for Witnesses

One of our readers, Bob Ellender writes:

"I was wondering if you could but this up for disscusion on your Blog site appealing for any witnesses. I know plenty of people read your site and and any help finding this scumbag would be great.

On Friday morning around 11.40 my Wife was assaulted and had her handbag snatched in the alley between Newington juniors and Infant schools as she was going to work the police are involved and have taken statements unfortunately she didn't get a good look at his face but remembers he was wearing a black and white jumper and darkish jeans and trainers. He then ran up the alley in direction of the railway but there are loads of ways he could of gone!

I was wondering if you could put something on your blog site appealing for any witnesses the handbag is black and a shiny black purse, two debit cards and loyalty cards for various shops and household keys with two keyrings on a Samsung D500 mobile phone and a small black and white umbrella.

She has received a broken cheekbone which needs to be seen by a specialist at Canterbury Hospital on Friday and is in shock about the event.

Any help would be appreciated."

Ed: What an awful experience for her. Very happy to help Bob and I hope your wife makes a speedy recovery.

This is an outrage and someting that does not happen in Conservative wards as much as it does in Labour wards. Being poor is no excuse to mug people or to vote Labour

Bob, I hope Mrs Ellender recovers well and that people can help.

I don't think there are political boundaries to muggings, Samuel.! There is evidence that the young are more likely to be victims of crime perpetrated by youngsters and that proportionately, poorer income households tend to be on the end of unwelcome attention from lawless neighbours in regard to burglary.

Sam I am used to the rough and tumble of politics and that really is scraping the barrel. To think like that makes you no different than the **** who attacked Bob's wife.

Bob, I hope you wife is okay and the police catch the scumbag.

Several years ago I had to speak to someone at TDC by the name, I think, of Nigel Cruttenden.
He was something to do with community safety.
Anyway his only comment when I explained the problems my area (CW) was having was to say "what do you expect in that area"?
He would do nothing about it.
Unfortunately I do think Newington is also somewhat of a no go area.

I spent the day at Margate Magistrates Court today, it was quite interesting.
The sentences handed down were pretty fair IMHO, and were definitely creative and designed to reducate and rehabilitate rather than just punish by loss of liberty or by imposing fines which would probably not be paid at all or by legitimate means.
I was quite impressed, however not by the terrible acoustics of Court 1, nor by the CPS prosecutor , a lady who had such a heavy African accent that by listening hard I understood about 1 word out of 5.
Interestingly all the defendants with non-local names seemed to be in another courtroom, maybe it is because they have interpreters there?
Does anyone know this? There were quite a few of these defendants today.

First of all many thanks Cllr moores for allowing space on your site secondly many thanks for the best wishes from everyone my wife is still in pain and shock over the event an update for you all a object from my wifes handbag was found in the alleyway Im not allowed to say what it is but this has been handed to the police for DNA fingerprints etc etc I dont want this subject to be turned into a slagging match about politics as i feel that would do no good to the cause of this appeal but just to say Anon 10.42 this scumbag spoke very clear English according to my wife.

Again Many thanks and hopefully we can catch this person!!! before he strikes again

I was sorry to learn of this and hope that the person responsible is caught soon.
Insofar as Newington being a no go area that is of course utter rubbish, it is no better or worse than anywhere else, in fact figures suggest that it is getting a lot better despite what the new Community Safety Manager has to say in this weeks Extra.

If you have nothing better to do and have had enough of watching Trisha Goddard and the flow of human dross on that show why not get out to Canterbury Crown Court and watch a few trials float through? To the lay person it really is an eye opener, to me it still remains so too and I work in Law Enforcement. A month a go I took the office newbie to Crown Court where we watched several plea and case management hearings (prior to our own) for such crimes as Benefit Fraud (very satisfying, especially seeing a local lady enter a guilty plea, her medical condition had improved somewhat), drug importation, sexual (you might not want to listen in on these), Robbery and theft. Whilst you are more than entitled to sit in the public gallery please ensure your mobile telephone is turned off and you do not distract the court by chatting loudly or you may find yourself being reprimanded by an irrate Judge, which is never pretty. If you can't get to Canterbury sitting in at Magistrates Court is just as enlightening. There are a lot of people in public service working very hard to exercise justice though it does seem harder and harder as the system becomes more and more anal.
