A History of Birchington

Michael's Bookshop has sent me a fascinating re-print "History of the Ville of Birchington" to look at.

Originally published in 1893 by J.P Barrett "The Annals of Birchington" offer a detailed pocket history of the village and its immediate area, starting at the Norman conquest. If, like me, you share an interest in local history, this is certainly a book to have in your collection.

That so much colourful 'history' happened in such a small village, never ceases to surprise.

I'm sorry to say but I think Birchington is even more ugly than Bob Geldof's Daughter.

All the money from the Thanet council tax payer seems to go to Birchington and I want to know why?

Funnny, I thought it was Broadstairs where a lot of money went.
One things for sure, it aint Cliftonville West where its desperately needed.

Ed, I agree with you, Birchington does have some interesting history and the book is well worth getting.

It surprised me both in its scope and readability, bit of a page turner really Tony interesting old maps and pictures of the Turner K9 area of Margate on your blog I thought. We really are lucky with our history in Thanet you know, do you think there is any way to get the maps reprinted cheaply I have some nice Ramsgate ones but the printing quotes I have had mean an investment of over £1,000 per map. Alternatively if you scan them in suitable size for an A4 book I could produce an historical atlas of the area.

I didn't know, or ever have I thought, that Birchington is uglier than Margate. It certainly doesn't get more money from TDC/KCC. It's just that nicer people live there, with the exception of 1 or 2, so it may seem that it's altogether nicer.
We don't have the luxury of the 'loop' buses, or Westwood Cross on our doorstep. Our High Street or Station Road looks very healthy though, with 2 supermarkets & I believe only 1 empty shop, so it can't be uglier than Margate. I get the cringes when I walk up Margate High Street. I started my working career in a High Street shop, in those days it was a throbbing centre of community, sort of like Westwood Cross only a million times superior. Even that 'Centre' is near to empty, in the upper half.
This automatically discredits that area.
Honest to gd, what can you do with it? I believe the TDC are at a total loss as to which way to turn now.
Best thing to do would be knock it flat, build Hotel's and flat,s above nice little shops!

Anon 10.58 says that no money is going into Cliftonville West! Millions of pounds of 'SSCF' cash is going solely into CW and Margate Central wards, and they've just heard that this will last for an extra two years until 2010. It's in the papers, on the side of busses and on the TDC website!

Michael Child, it might be worth popping into Fast Micros in Westbrook, they have a top quality A3 scanner and a 42 inch wide printer which might do the job on the maps.

Anon 10.03, its all very well saying its on the TDC website, on buses and in the papers but how much will actually filter through to the streets ?????

Thats what counts, not hot air or BS, and TDC can BS for England!

Anon 1.14, about £2 million has been spent on the streets in the last 2 years on about 75 different projects. The money is reduced for next year but I think it's still over half a million - and remember - Cliftonville West and Margate Central ONLY. This is money from central government and doesn't come out of any local pots at all, it's all extra. Rather than TDC using BS or spinning it this way or that I'd say they're actually guilty of not making enough noise about it!

The spend does seem to be somewhat invisible, C West is still a dirty horrible place to live, I live there so I know!
