Hat in the Ring

An item of Westgate-related news for you. I have been accepted as a Conservative candidate to stand for the ward in the May council elections.

Over a year ago, I was approached by the Residents Association and asked if I might consider standing as an independent candidate but after giving the suggestion the long and careful attention it deserved, I replied that running as an independent would be unlikely to see me elected and if it did, then the chances of achieving anything constructive, sitting as an isolated Member at the edge of the council chamber, wouldn’t be much use to the people of Westgate where I have lived for much of the last fifty years.

Being a member of the Conservative party it’s only natural that I stand for the political right of centre and I was naturally delighted to be asked if I might stand in Westgate, where I feel I might be able to do the most good as an elected representative.

In the run-up to May 3rd you’re very welcome to tell me, here in Westgate, what my priorities should be. Of course I have my own observations and ideas as a local resident, but I don`t have a monopoly of views and that`s why the ‘Thanet Life’ weblog I started is so useful with just under a quarter of a million visitor impressions since it first started counting.

It was Winston Churchill who said “Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried” but perhaps with your help, I can prove him wrong - at least in Westgate on Sea! .

If you don’t know me, then for a summary and a snapshot of who I am and what I do, you can find my profile at www.myspace.com/drmoores

I cant wish you success, but I do hope you enjoy the experience. Should you succeed, I'm sure you'll do a better job than the current encumbents.

Thank you David, I think that anyone who knows me will expect me to make a small difference if I'm elected in May.

I most certainly can wish you success, and David too for that matter, in these interesting times government needs as many able and dedicated people, as are willing to stand. Engaged, as I am at the moment, in a dialogue with local government about the height of spring tides, I find it interesting that the people involved seem to consider the height of the sea, to be also a party political issue. It occurred to me that the following quotation, one of my favourite relating to politics, both explained much about the state of the world today and was appropriate to the beginning of any political career. (Ronald Reagan 1911-) “Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.”

Interested by your comment of 4.17pm! Have you got the Gazunder flagged in a way that when they visit Thanetlife, you can spot and identify them? Is it a question of 'Big Doc' instead of 'Big Bruv'?
Nice to know they Thanetlife as a news source!

What a relief it will be to have a representative of Westgate who actually has an interest in the concerns of locals. There is more to being a Councillor than actually having the title and it is not enough to simply have the title printed on your cheque book to impress people. It is a sometimes thankless job, sometimes very rewarding job and an honour to be voted in my residents. Simon Moores will make a brilliant Councillor and the person he is replacing lost sight of what the people want and served their own ends.
Good luck Simon, if you are not successful then the voters of Westgate will have lost a real opportunity to get things done. It is in their hands. Let's hope people recognise a good thing when they see it.
