King Ethelbert's School from Above

can anyone tell me why this particular photo is one of the most popular in my aerial photo library? Perhaps it's being studied by the 4th year tunnel committee, planning a "Great Escape" during maths one afternoon!

Probably property developers and building companies eyeing up the site wondering how much green land it can take for housing...

Its a very nice photo.

They had planning permission refused on turning the south end of their playing fields into housing to pay for a sports hall. Do they still have plans for a sports hall as rumour in Westgate is that their Ursuline College neighbours also intend to put up a big barn of a sports hall. Two big barns in nextdoor schools? I can't find details on TDC planning applications site about this building activity. Does anyone know about how Dr Moores lovely picture will change in the next year or two?

Young smokers looking for suitable corners to hide in?

While on the subject of housing I visited the car park in Harold Rd Cliftonville soon to be sold at auction by TDC with the benefit of the planning permission they granted themselves - two property developers were there measuring up today - they found that the site measures about 48 foot buildable width - for the 4 houses there are planning for that will mean
( allowing for wall thickness) a maximum internal width of about 10 feet (or 3 metres) per house, this includes the front door.

Not much width there!

And then presumably there will be a 1m wide staircase, leaves 2m max for the two upper floors!

Yould better not be a big person if you want to live there.

Trust TDC to max it up.

That's quality housing for you.

The UK Planning site can be tricky to use as the address you are looking for is the one that is on the applicaton form and sometimes its not very clear what the address is.

One example is of a mobile phone mast for the field next to the Drapers Almsfield (yes the one next to the Alshouses and within easy reach of the hospice and the hospital). The address on the application is confusing as it says "Land R/O Drapers Close, Ramsgate Road". The land next to Drapers Close is on St Peters Road not Ramsgate Road.

One great bit of news today, the lines at the Victoria Lights have been repainted so they are much clearer now. Im not completely satisfied but its definitely a step in the right direction. Its made a little clearer next to the Victoria pub that traffic isnt supposed to turn right coming off College Road. Id hoped they would paint "No Right Turn" to make it absolutely clear but cant complain too much about this improvement.

The Ursuline Sports hall is a mystery to everyone execpt Thanet D COUNCIL.They gave it ref no M/TH/05/1341 And also KCC TH/05/TEMP/0072, but for some raeson, these references do not bring up ANY information!!#
WHY!!

No wonder the council deny all knowledge, they only wanted one sports hall to be shared by both schools, not one huge one each. The neighbours have been mislead as usual and were up in arms. I think they have given up, knowing that the council will do what it wants anyway! Still, it was a nice picture with nice fields to be seen!

With a number of applications, files are missing or werent uploaded properly. Looking into Margate Football Clubs past applications, there are large gaps in the plans on the planning site, often with the elevation plans.

There have been no problems getting hold of details on the planning site to see what is happening at St Augustines major development in Westgate and the initial bid that was turned down at King Ethelberts was on the site for all to see.
Was the fact that we Westgate residents looked it up and then protested that caused the sudden problem of inaccessibility to planning docs and applications?

So much for freedom of information; WHAT ARE KCC AND TDC trying to hide from Westagte people? Are King Ethelberts and Ursoline planning to put huge Sports Halls up on green fields or what?

James Maskell said...

If they are planning to do it, then the applications will appear on the UK Planning site. Any applications relating to Ursuline College or King Ethelberts will have to go before Council as a departure from the Local Plan because that area is part of the Green Wedge.

James, I agree they should be on the Uk planning site.

The whole problem is that they are not.

Are you able to track them down because I cant, even with reference numbers!
If you can track them down please let us know so that we can all have a look.

James Maskell said...

I will have a look for you though Im sure youve found all that can be found on the site. Will report back if I find anything...

Ive tracked it down for you. The references were right. The link below should go to a report which will be coming before KCC Planning Committee on the 14th February. It explains what TDC have said (they lodged an objection in December due to it being within the Green Wedge) and what KCC think (planning permission should be granted for it albeit with conditions).

http://www.apps.kent.gov.uk/cs/planapps/pdf/Item_D1_-_Ursuline_Sports_Hall.pdf

The report notes that the Councillor responsible for the area is Cllr Robert Burgess so it might be worth giving him a call tho its probably too late now to be able to stop it.

I think the reason why it couldnt be found on the UK Planning site is because its a KCC application so it goes on the KCC website instead. Hope that helps.

Thankyou James! Brill!

I've flagged this with Cllr Burgess.. who notes the road link issue and will look into it

I had thought the the protest
last year had effectively "canned" the plans but it looks very much as if this application with just about every other application I can think of, will pass in the face of valid local concerns and objections

I think there is more to this than meets the eye! The Ursuline College cut down an oak tree in their grounds in late 2004 in order to clear the area for the new sports hall of any protected trees. Mr Adamson the Thanet Council trees officer was informed on several occasions, but strangely never responded to this information. One would have thought our green council would have acted to protect such trees!

Thanks for commenting Tracy. I dont think any of the trees within the site are covered by a TPO (Tree Preservation Order) so they can take down the tree if they want.

The only way it can be stopped is if those on the Committee vote against it. That means lobbying. I can have a list of the Councillors for you tomorrow morning. Email me and Ill send it to you.

Im sorry that this has happened so late. Theres still a chance though.

James, tried the details you gave us and got page not available! Any other way of getting a look at application on line?

I have a post that isnt up yet (Simon, could you have a look at it please)...it was posted during the same minute as Westgate Resident. To read it, click "Post a Comment" and scroll up.

Ive no idea why its not up. It was an application for a 6 court badminton sport hall including a climbing wall. Try it tomorrow morning. As soon as I can get it Ill save a copy onto my computer and Ill forward it to any interested people. Anyone who wants a copy, do email me and Ill forward it to you when I save a copy of the report from the website.

My email address is kenyan_lion@yahoo.co.uk
